I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design from UP Diliman, and while at UP, I was a member of the UP Concert Chorus, an agitprop writer of SAMASA at one point, a features writer for the Philippine Collegian, and a Yakal resident.
After a few years working in the advertising world, I decided to pursue my first love - teaching - and went and got my credits to teach, my Master's Degrees in English and Special Education, and my PhD in Educational Management at The University of Perpetual Help -Rizal. I was working as the English Department Head of Southville International Schools and Colleges in Las Pinas before my family, a husband and two girls, moved to Canada in February 2006.
My first job in Canada was at an English as a Second Language school in Downtown Vancouver and Sylvan Learning Centre. After appealing my case for certification as a BC Teacher, I was certified in January 2008 and began teaching in the Catholic Independent School Board as a classroom teacher, and I have been loving it ever since!
As a UP graduate, I have always had service to others as a lifetime goal, be it on the musical stage performing to raise money for Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP), or writing and featuring Filipino-Canadians who have worked hard to be where they truly shine. As a member for Couples for Christ, I believe service to others is where God has directed me. Being president of the UPAABC is an honour, and another opportunity to fulfill what God has given me to accomplish for the good of His creation, and His greater glory.

Mylene Villanueva Lim
Vice President, Socials and Cultural Committee
I completed my Bachelor’s Degree from the Asian Institute of Tourism and was active in the organizations UPSCA, Fil-Chi and IBAA while studying at UP Diliman. My family and I arrived in BC in 2002.
I initially worked for the family business upon graduating from UP. Then, I helped managed the businesses that my husband (Sherwin Lim, also a UP Econ graduate) set up. The businesses - Asian Bonded Customs Warehouse and ABC Brokerage – continued on until after they moved to Canada, going remote management. I became a full-time mom during the day and was online with the Manila office at night.
Alas, kids grow up, our daughter is now computer programming analyst and has already escaped my tightly weaved cocoon while our son is in 3rd year university, still getting more than his fair share of helicopter-mom’s love and attention. Suddenly, I found myself with more free time and thus went into a field that had always interested me while we were flipping houses here in Canada- being a licensed mortgage broker in BC. Since then, I have been dedicating time and effort to help borrowers (especially our kababayans) navigate through the ever-changing housing market.
Meanwhile the business in the Philippines has expanded and my husband set up another company - Sea-To-Sky Logistics – to cater to our clients such as Nutri-Asia and Rebisco. I am finding myself slowly getting involved in administrative and financial side of this new company.
And now I have UPAABC added into the mix. I do love being part of this dynamic and close-knit organization and I will try my best to help and be of service to the wonderful people in this group.

Treasurer, Information and Education Committee
I am a Muslim Sama-Tausug born and raised in Quezon City, finished my Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, U.P. Diliman on a State Scholarship Grant. I also completed one year of the Master of Arts in Islamic Studies program (with honors) and two years of the Juris Doctor program in U.P. Diliman. As well, I graduated from the Ateneo de Manila High School with honors.
I arrived in Vancouver in 2013 to pursue higher education; he successfully completed a Master’s degree in Administrative Science with Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2015.
Having had work experience in proprietorships and nonprofits in the Philippines, I helped found the Canadian Good Life Foundation, a Vancouver-based educational advocacy organization in 2015. I currently serve as its Director and Secretary.
I also have experience working with local food service establishments, gaining an underpinning in Vancouver business processes and standards first-hand.
I am still very much attuned and interested in public, educational, and community service, having come from a family of distinguished civil servants and officials. I count a Senator, Elections Commissioner, provincial governors, School Superintendent, Cabinet secretary, board members/commissioners, teachers, and nurses – mostly U.P. alumni - amongst my relations.
I look forward to joining the U.P. Alumni Association in British Columbia as its Treasurer and head of the Information and Education Committee.

Emma Murray
Assistant Treasurer, Administrative
I am now retired and am married to Bruce Murray. I migrated to Canada in 2009 after my husband retired from the Asian Development Bank. We have 3 daughters and a son who are all university graduates and professionals and I am a proud grandmother of 3 boys from 2 daughters. Soon there will be another grandson to cherish.
My education and work experience are in the areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Economics. After high school, I was offered a scholarship at the Assumption College. But due to the problems associated with a very long commute on public transport, it became difficult for me to continue at that school. Because the 1971-72 period was marked by intensified student activism, there was a government directive that year suspending transferring to other schools which affected my transfer to UP. As I did not want to stop my education, I sought someone’s help and was able to enrol at the Far Eastern University where I earned my degree in AB Mathematics (cum laude) in 1974. I wanted to earn a double major so I went back to UP and enrolled at the UP Statistical Centre under a national sponsored program in 1975-1976. The Central Bank of the Philippines (now called Bangkok Sentral ng Pilipinas) hired me in 1976 as a Financial Analyst/Statistician, so my studies at UP was disrupted again. Later I was given a management role at the Central Bank and worked on economic research, econometric modeling and part of the group that provided advice and support to the Monetary Board. In 1984 the Central Bank sent me to take a master’s degree in Economics on a full-time basis at the UP School of Economics. I earned the MA degree in 1986 and was invited to the PH D program. I gained a PH. D. Candidate status in 1986 having completed the courses and comprehensive exams at PH D level.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) offered me a job in 1991 to do economic analysis and prepare budget and programs for project finances in their Programs Department and later at its Department of Economic Research. At ADB I worked on the programs for Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Mongolia. When my husband and our family were posted in Beijing, China, in 2000, I went on leave and eventually took an early retirement from ADB in 2003.
Since retiring I have done volunteer work at international schools in Beijing and Manila and my high school alumni association. I also volunteered with the ADB Spouses Association where I served as Secretary, President and Editor of its Bulletin during the 2004 to 2009 period. I sometimes do research, statistical, and online survey work for my husband who has continued doing consulting work for international organizations. In Canada I continued my volunteer work through our church activities and joined the UPAABC in the last 2 years.
I look forward to contributing to the work, events and projects of UPAABC.

Anita Aytona
Director of Membership, Fellowship and Membership Committee
I finished BS Education, major in Math then took MA Teaching of Math in UP Diliman. Because programming was the latest trend in the early ‘80s, I also took courses at National Computer Institute in Camp Aguinaldo to become a licensed computer programmer.
I taught in La Salle Green Hills then migrated with the family in 1991. My love for Math transcended to Canada where I have been teaching Pre-Calculus and Calculus for 25 years at Holy Cross High School in Surrey. For 10 years now, my job has enabled me to travel with at least 40 Holy Cross students/staff to the Philippines to do mission work through ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor). Since 2006, we have been building houses for our poor kababayans in QC, Caloocan, Antipolo, Batangas, etc. and also visit orphanages.
My husband, Tony, is happily retired and keeps busy by jogging, swimming, playing tennis and golf. Our son is now a Canadian immigration consultant in Manila while our daughter just finished her masters in Toronto.
As the UPAABC director for membership, I look forward to working with everyone in expanding our membership and planning activities that will appeal to all groups of varying ages, interests and talents.
